Far from nothing.
From the deck it feels like there is nothing for a hundred miles. There is, and that's the point! You just can't see or hear any of it. The drive in follows the New River, one of the oldest rivers on earth, then climbs to the ridge and leaves the rest behind.
Five minutes back down puts you on trout water and at the river put-in. Twenty gets you to the Blue Ridge Parkway, or into West Jefferson for galleries, breweries and a proper dinner. Thirty reaches Grayson Highlands and the wild ponies. Nothing worth doing is far, and none of it follows you home.
